    SEE WHO YOU’VE HELPED – March 1, 2010

If you would like to be added to our e-mail distribution list for this “See Who You’ve Helped” newsletter, please e-mail me at dogstarEML @ gmail.com.

There were a variety of needs this past month, including pull fees, flight costs, and parvo treatment. Other things ARF has helped with in the past are health certificates, vaccinations, heartworm tests, surgery costs, and boarding, among others. There are many ways you can help rescue; monetary donations are always needed, but you can also start a toy/leash/blanket drive at work, volunteer at your local shelter one day a month to walk or wash dogs, arrange a play-date for rescue dogs in your area for some socialization, post flyers for your local rescue to advertise their dogs in need…LOTS of ways to help – be creative! Even the smallest things can help – donate a bottle of bleach, a ream of paper, or a pack of stamps to your shelter or rescue. As we like to say, “A lot of littles make a lot!” Thanks for all the things you do, big and small – EVERY effort for the dogs is appreciated!

UPDATE ON ATHENA from February -
Athena is a 2 year old female red heeler who is currently in foster care in Meridian, ID. Athena has at one time had both of her back legs broken and not properly cared for. One back leg has healed straight and is not used while the other back leg healed at an angle. Athena is able to walk, although with an unsteady gate and is not able to run. A wheelchair has been donated to Athena for the cost of shipping ($40-$75), however, it has been determined that surgery will not help her legs. Her foster mom reports that her disability does not slow her down much though, and that she is the sweetest girl who loves to have the side of her face and tummy rubbed. She has a wonderful non-dominant and loving temperament. Athena is now available for adoption. If you are interested in this dear special needs girl, please contact her foster mom, Carol, at adoptioncoordinator @ gmail.com.

PATCHES - $25 pull fee. Patches is an 8-year-old female ACD mix, an owner surrender who was pulled on her last day and is currently in Georgia, awaiting transport to Hulls Haven Rescue in Canada. She is a dominant female, but with time and good management, she has settled in and is now doing fine with her temp-foster’s dogs. She LOVES people, and has very striking colors! Pretty Patches is up-to-date on shots and is heartworm negative. She has a lot of life in her yet! If you think Patches might be the dog for you, contact Sally at hullshaven @ yahoo.ca.

LAREDO - $200 flight costs. Laredo was a young male stray who was taken in by her new dad in Oklahoma about 6 months ago. But Dad got his deployment orders to Japan, and is leaving in March. Unfortunately, Laredo could not go along; a very kind lady in New Jersey offered to provide a foster or forever home for Laredo, and after they talked extensively by phone and e-mail, and the woman was approved by ACDRA, Laredo flew out to make himself at home on the east coast. ARF paid $200 to help with the flight costs and crate to get him there; we were pleased to be able to help a U.S. soldier have one less worry when he is overseas.

FOXY FINNEGAN - $250 Parvo treatment. Cute-as-a-button Foxy Finnegan, a little red ACD mix, was pulled from a shelter in Whiteville, NC on his last day. He did very well in the temp-foster home until about the 3rd day when he stopped eating. His condition continued to deteriorate, and when taken to the vet, he tested strong positive for parvo, on top of having a high hookworm load. At this writing he is undergoing treatment, and has a good prognosis since he is a bit older. ARF contributed $250 toward his bill.

$25 Encouragement Donation for the month of March goes to Flying K9s Herding Dog Rescue (http://www.adoptapet.com/adoption_rescue/71395.html) in West Milton, OH, c/o Sjoukje Janssen. Thanks for all you do!

Donations to ARF for the dogs can be made in two ways – PayPal a payment to donations @ acdrescuefund.net, or you can make out a check to me and send to:

We send out this "See Who You've Helped" newsletter every month, and an accounting of all funds is available on request.

This fundraiser was started with the idea that $5 is not really too hard to come up with in a month, and we were hopeful that there would be a large number of people who might be willing to donate at least $5 per month (multiples always welcome!).

We’d like to hear your creative ideas for saving and fundraising! Donations are ALWAYS VOLUNTARY; we know that times are tight and you may not be able to give every month. We are still happy to send you updates.

If you would like to be added to our e-mail distribution list for this “See Who You’ve Helped” newsletter, please e-mail me at dogstarEML @ gmail.com.

    “ONE MORE…”
Those of you involved in rescue know there are many days when you think to yourself, “I just can’t do this anymore.” “I have to take a break.” “There are too many, I’m not even making a dent.” These are daily thoughts for those “in the trenches”, the ones doing the hands-on work in pulling, vetting, and caring for these dogs, and even those who are networking. The days revolve around finding those who might have one more spot into which they could squeeze one more dog in an already full house, find one more hour in their already too-full day, pull one more dollar from an already empty pocket, fit one more crate in an already full car, make one more phone call before closing, send one more e-mail before bed, in hopes of saving just one more dog… But what keeps them going is one more foster, one more adoption, one more donation, one more volunteer, one more word of thanks from someone whose life they’ve touched through the dogs they save…

So please, just one more time, thank those you know who work so hard, for following their hearts and doing a sometimes thankless job, for no other reason than that THEY CARE. We are forever grateful!

$100 – Clover (SICDR in Austin, IN) – spay, vetting. Clover, a pretty blue girl, was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Kentucky. ARF helped with the cost of her spay, as there seemed to be an inordinate number of unspayed females rescued this month and spay costs were high. If you are interested in Clover, contact Robyn Adair – rescuebluedogs@hotmail.com.

$30 – Bee (Vermillion, LA) - transport. Bee, a pretty blue female ACD, & Bella (kelpie) were marked Urgent in a high-kill shelter in Louisiana. Friends of Mansfield Animal Shelter in CT spoke for them, and they are scheduled for transport to CT this week. ARF contributed $30 for gas money to a transporter for her help in getting them to Arkansas, and another $100 toward paid transport to get Bee (& Bella) safely to CT. If you are interested in Bee, contact Cheryl Hutchings – isisofdalmatia@netzero.net.

$100 – Dillion (SICDR in Austin, IN) – Dillion, an older blue gentleman, needed the usual vetting and neuter, but he also came with a nasty tumor on his foot that was not healing and needed to be removed. ARF sent $100 to help with the cost of the tumor removal. If you are interested in Dillion, contact Robyn Adair – rescuebluedogs@hotmail.com.

$150 – MS Pearl (Mobile, AL) – spay, transport. MS Pearl is a young deaf blue female whose owners could not care for her properly. Aucado-MI offered to take her if transport could be arranged. ARF contributed $150 toward her flight fee and spay once she arrived in MI. MS Pearl arrived on 3/25. If you are interested in MS Pearl, contact Monica Larner – cowdogrescue@gmail.com.

    SEE WHO YOU’VE HELPED – May 1, 2010

If you would like to be added to our e-mail distribution list for this “See Who You’ve Helped” newsletter, please e-mail me at dogstarEML @ gmail.com.

First of all – a very special THANK YOU to all those who responded to our plea for extra donations this month. About $200 extra was raised to help those dogs mentioned in the plea. Updates are below. The little family in Chesterfield was pulled and is being fostered privately until transport. They may still need funds for vetting/boarding, but that is not definite yet.

The bottom half of this newsletter remains unchanged with basic information for all who read it. Most of you who have been receiving this for some time probably ignore it now. J But this time, in addition to the last paragraph at the end of the newsletter, I am also asking “up here” for help – not MONETARY help, but IDEA help. We have a very dedicated core of donors who give faithfully every month, and a few who give whenever they can – and we are so grateful! Every month, however, it seems we use up just about all funds available – which is as it should be, and is our goal – however, the needs are growing greater every month, and our funds are not. Note that I said this is NOT a request for more money. To those who give on a regular basis, you are more than generous with your giving, and we never want you to feel that we are “begging”, nor do we ever want anyone to feel obligated; everyone gets way too many requests “begging” for monetary help as it is in these tough times. This is a request for IDEA help - we would welcome new ideas and creative input for fundraising so that we can help more dogs when we get requests. So if you have any ideas on anything we could do as a group or as individuals, please send them to me, and please also let me know whether you would mind if I shared them via this newsletter; perhaps what might not work for one person/group might be just the ticket for another. Recently we have been receiving, on average, approximately $350-$450/month. It sounds like a lot. But if we have 4 requests for help in a month, that will usually use up all or most of the available funds. So your thoughts and ideas are welcomed! (And if anybody comes up with a sure-fire cure for irresponsible owners while you’re at it, we welcome that too!)

$100 – Benny in Elgin, SC – hip surgery
Benny was pulled by Carolina ACD Rescue & Rebound & is recuperating well from surgery.

$75 – Texas Pete - flight from TX to adopter in NC
Texas Pete was in a Texas kill shelter; his smiley face caught the attention of an approved adopter in NC. TCDR helped facilitate his flight.

$250 – Sheila in Chatsworth, CA – leg surgery
Sheila was rescued by Love 4 Canines and is recuperating from surgery on her broken leg. There is still a $1100 balance on her bill.

$150 – 2 ACD pups – flight from TX to foster in OR
There was a litter of five 7-8 week old pups found in a box by the side of the road near Wichita Falls, TX. They were taken to the local Humane Society, and the two that are left are scheduled to fly to a waiting foster home in Oregon on May 5th. Pictured is one of the two pups.

$25 Encouragement Donation for the month of May goes to New Hope Cattle Dog Rescue-Arizona, c/o Shannon Stevens. Thanks for all you do!

In response to some feedback, it was requested that donation information be put toward the top of the newsletter. So I will try that starting with this issue. Any other feedback, either on this newsletter or on ARF is always welcome.

I had one suggestion for fund-raising, and that was from someone who is willing to try making some good quality booties for those active dogs who need a foot covering, or for some protection during recovery. We’ll let you know when those become available.

I am also doing a custom address label fundraiser for ARF; a picture of your dog(s) – or any other subject you’d like – on a sheet of 30 labels. Yeah, you get a lot of those freebies in the mail, but these are soooo much “cooler” because they are of YOUR DOG! J Price is $1/sheet of 30 labels, +$2 shipping per order. E-mail me at dogstarEML @ gmail.com for an e-mail sample. If you are interested, send me a picture, with the address you would like on the label, and let me know whether you would prefer block or script print. I’ll send a proof, and then finals on approval. Allow 2-3 weeks for workup and delivery.

Here are the dogs you helped this month:

$200 – Chesterfield Mom and pups – Chesterfield, SC. Mom and her litter of 8 pups were scheduled to go on a transport to rescue on the east coast, however, the puppies came down with parvo while in foster care. One was lost, but the others are now recovered, and arrived at their rescue this past week. ARF donated for their vetting.

$94 – Sunday (now Sunny) – Harlan, KY. We were alerted to this dog in mid-May by a rescue volunteer. Sunday had recently had pups, and the pups were transported to rescue, but Sunday was left behind. A foster home was found in Wisconsin, and things came together quickly. Sunday was transported to a temp foster, and then to her long-term foster last week. ARF sent $94 to cover her initial vetting and HW test – unfortunately, it was found that she is HW+, and we are in the process of locating a rescue-friendly vet in the area, so that she can begin her treatment.

$130 - Harley – Winchester, VA. Harley came to our attention via an e-mail from his owner, asking for help with surgery for a dislocated hip. The owner had rescued Harley from a neighbor several years ago and has been a responsible owner, but has had some hard times, and the $$ for treatment was unavailable. ARF along with another rescue has contributed funds to help with diagnosis and surgery for Harley’s condition, which took place this past Friday. His owner reports that he is expected to wear a sling for several weeks, and recover fully with no other surgery necessary.

FACES TO PUT WITH THE NAMES: http://tinyurl.com/22m8cqw

$25 Encouragement Donation for the month of May goes to Blue Dog Rescue in CT (https://sites.google.com/site/blueheelerdogrescue/), c/o Ruth Lack. Thanks for all you do!

In the coming month, we have two pending needs so far – “Bubble Gum” (aka Blue), a young pup in Sioux City, IA with an ear condition diagnosed as “Polyps with sebaceous hyperplasia, connective tissue and mixed inflammation”. He had one surgery to remove the largest nodules, but will need one more surgery to remove the remaining nodules, at a cost of $125-$175. Before and after pics here - http://tinyurl.com/29h9a45. This little guy is also looking for an adopter or another rescue!

Also, we were notified of a domestic abuse situation about a month ago, where the owner had to move to a shelter quickly; and for safety reasons she had to relinquish her dog to the local humane society, where they are holding him until she can raise funds to fly him to her new location. This is estimated at approximately $100. The circumstances have been verified and we would like to help if possible. The shelter is donating the crate; flight funds are all that is necessary to get this dog safely back into his owner’s arms so that he doesn’t end up staying at the shelter.

This month saw fewer donations, and fewer dogs in need, but with more expensive needs than most – surgeries were the “expense of the day”, and quickly used up available dollars.

Here are the dogs you helped this month:

FACES TO PUT WITH THE NAMES:http://tinyurl.com/29h9a45

Toby – $100 ear surgery. Toby, a 3-year-old ACD in Iowa with an ear condition that caused him to have large nodules grow in his ears to such extent that it greatly affected his hearing. ARF contributed $100 toward Toby’s second surgery; he is now being fostered by BCRMN (Border Collie Rescue of Minnesota).

Rusty Red – $520 eye removal surgery. Rusty, a red male ACD in California who was rescued and adopted by a kind woman who saw the deplorable conditions he had been living in; one of his eyes had been scratched by a cat and never treated…Rusty Red is blind in that eye, but really needed to have it removed due to the pain it was causing him, but his new owner could not afford the $1000+ surgery. ARF donations were close to being used up by this point, but donors stepped up to the plate in a mighty way, and thanks to the wonderful generosity of many people, we raised the $520 needed to cover the remainder of what was needed for his surgery.

Sheila – $100 – surgery/heartworm treatment – Sheila, a senior blind cattledog rescued by Carolina ACD R&R, was found to have pyometra once in rescue. She had several surgeries to correct this condition. She had other parasites as well, and was also diagnosed as low heartworm positive. Looking into her sweet old blind eyes, they could not turn her down. We would like to raise more funds to help with the expenses incurred by Carolina R&R in caring for Sheila.

Here are the dogs you helped this month:

FACES TO PUT WITH THE NAMES:http://tinyurl.com/26omnky

Sam (Womelsdorf, PA) - $100 vetting – An older rescue, Sam was diagnosed with gastroenteritis, a UTI, and kidney problems, incurring a bill over $1000 for diagnostics and treatment. Sam’s owner rescued him 3 years ago, and she is hoping to have a few more good years with Sam.

Dash (Carolina ACD Rescue & Rebound) - $100 leg surgery – Dash is a puppy who jumped off a bed at his foster home and caught his leg between the bedframe and mattress, resulting in a femoral fracture of the growth plate. Pins were inserted to stabilize his leg. He is recovering well, and his greatest challenge seems to be keeping calm & quiet! (Yeah, right, he’s an ACD!)

Ranger (Portland, OR) - $150 – Enlarged heart and Grade 3 heart murmur. Ranger was a Texas pup who came to Oregon to find a new home. He’s 2 now; his wonderful mom and dad helped him make it through giardia, coccidia, and numerous other parasites, only to find out that he has an enlarged heart, a Grade 3 heart murmur and 3 leaky valves. Basically, he has the heart of a 15-year-old dog. ARF sent $150 toward his vet bill for diagnosis; he will need more for treatment, and we hope to be able to help more, so that this pup will have a quality life for whatever time he has left.

Update on Rusty Red – Remember Rusty Red, the guy with the eye problem who had the eye removed, thanks to our donors? He is doing very well in recovery. SO well, in fact, that he is escaping his owner’s 6-foot fence, and has been caught twice by animal control, cruising the neighborhood. Rusty needs to be neutered (we’re working on this) and his owner does not have the means to update her fence anymore than she has. She is terrified of losing him to AC and possibly being PTS, and feels that a new home with someone who has more time to spend with him, and a better means to contain him would be his best option. He is a sweet dog otherwise, but we know that an intact, one-eyed escape artist is probably going to be pretty hard to place. Please keep your eyes and ears out for such a rescuer/adopter, and if one should happen to cross your path, contact me and I will put you in touch with the people trying to help Rusty Red. He is in El Cajon, CA.

To all of our donors – past, present and future – THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!

    Your ARF Team,
    Eileen, Laurey, Di & Mel

We had a very generous donation early this month by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. “Use it for good” the person told us, and so they can see below that it has indeed, been “used for good”! Donations like that are not the norm, though…we continue to see an ever-growing need for financial help for cattledogs in need. Even with this large donation, funds were gone by mid-month. So please help us spread the word for this breed we love so much!

Here are the dogs you helped this month:

FACES TO PUT WITH THE NAMES: http://tinyurl.com/27kndqv

Cowboy – Cowboy, a handsome blue male, needed transport from a kill shelter in Alabama to rescue in NYC. ARF sent $100 to help with Cowboy’s transport costs.

Juno – Juno, a pretty red-speckled ACD, needed transport from a kill shelter in Asheville, NC to rescue in NYC. ARF sent $75 to help with Juno’s transport costs.

Hope – Hope, a very nice blue female, needed transport from Asheville, NC to rescue in NJ. ARF sent $75 to help with Hope’s transport costs. Hope has already been adopted, and renamed “Liberty”.

Reba Reba is an elderly cattledog taken in by Blue Dog Rescue in CT. Reba is HW+, and in addition needed removal of one eye due to deterioration and pressure. ARF sent $150 toward Reba’s medical care. We have since found out that Reba had her first heartworm treatment and two weeks later was found to be pregnant with 5 puppies. Her prognosis and that of the puppies is not good. Please put your Bentleys on high for this dear mama and her babies.

Peepers – Peepers is a sweet elderly cattledog rescued at the last minute for ACDRA, and fostered in NC. Peepers has a variety of health issues, and recently had surgery for removal of 6 mammary tumors. ARF sent $100 to help with Peepers’ vet bills.

Ringo – Ringo is a handsome ACD/GSD mix with a Bentley on the SIDE of his face – but what a handsome boy! Ringo was pulled at – not the last hour – but literally the last MINUTE – for Flying K9s Herd Dog Rescue and is being fostered in Dayton, OH. ARF sent $55 for Ringo’s pull fee.

Newt (ACDx), Pandie (ACD), Lucy (ACD) – All were in a kill shelter in WV. Tammy (now Lucy) was adopted, Pandie went to ACD Rescue in IL, and Newt is on his way to Homeward Bound in Minnesota. Lucy’s adopter lives in MN, and most graciously offered to DRIVE DOWN AND BRING ALL THREE back to rescue – a trip of nearly 2000 miles! This was a huge help to us, as WV drivers are very difficult to find! ARF sent $200 to the adopter to help with gas costs.

Mystery – Mystery, an ACDx and her mother Missy, a purebred red ACD, were in a kill shelter in Americus, GA. The shelter told us that Missy got sick and was euthed. We scrambled to find a foster for “Mistr”, who was originally thought to be a male pup, but when the foster got “him” home, found that “he” was a “she”, and her name was changed to Mystery. It’s a mystery how she got where she was, and a mystery what she’s mixed with, but one thing’s for sure, she’s a sweetheart, and has gone to Homeward Bound Rescue in Minnesota where she awaits her forever home.

2 ACDx pups (unnamed) – A shelter volunteer in Lufkin, TX brought these two pups to our attention. There was a volunteer to take them in Oregon, but we spent 3 weeks trying to work out transport to no avail. Finally, after a few inquiries, Meri Lou with Rockwall Animal Rescue in TX agreed to take them; she was very full already, but made room for these two. ARF donated $75 to help with the vetting costs for these two lucky pups.
